Friendaversary Road Trip!

This year we celebrated our tenth Friendaversary! 10 years of friendship felt monumental. Our friendship has been a constant during graduating college, starting new jobs, marriages and moves. Any one of those things could mark the fading of our relationship but we prevailed! So we felt that we needed more than just your average celebration. Dinner was not going to suffice.

Christine is a fan of the interior design show Junk Gypsies on HGTV. If you aren’t familiar with the show, two sisters (the original best friends!) find ‘junk’ and reimagine it and use it in their interior design projects. So, because Christine is a fan of the show she knew that the Sikes sisters have a store front in Round Top, TX just about two hours outside of Houston where we live.

Both of us are teachers so we have the luxury of having summers off. We decided to celebrate our Friendaversary over the summer when we would both be able to relax and enjoy it a little more. So we met in the morning, picked up some Whataburger and hit the road.

We arrived at the Junk Gypsy and were immediately excited. There was the iconic pink suburban Large Marge parked out front.

We wandered in and were greeted by the cutest little store! It isn’t very large but they definitely make the most of the space. Though the store is not very big we walked around it at least 5 times always finding something new to look at. And the nice things about the store is that there were items  for every price point, from $5.00 koozies to $500 light fixtures.

We each found a few things we were excited to purchase and upholding tradition we found our celebratory Friendaversary gift. Two pairs of cactus earrings - $9 for both pairs, a steal.

Don't be jealous of our cactus earrings!
After spending a couple of hours shopping we took a few minutes and sat out on the rocking chairs in front of the store. Despite it being summer in Texas there was shade and a nice breeze and it was surprisingly pleasant and not miserable!

See, smiles! Not drenched in sweat!

It was still early so we decided to have lunch in town. If you are in Round Top, you’ve got to eat at Royer’s Café. It’s a tiny little spot that only seats 40 total people but it has been featured in many publications as a foodie destination. We have to cosign this sentiment!
So delicious!

We were struggling to make a decision on what to eat so I got a burger and Christine got the highly recommended shrimp sandwich and we cut them in half so we could share. That’s what best friends do. If at some point you find yourself in Round Top, TX and you are eating at Royer's do yourself a favor and get the shrimp sandwich. Oh my goodness it was amazing!

Royer’s food is good but the real reason you go is for the pie. Holy Cow! First of all, good luck trying to decide what to get, these are not your run of the mill apple pies. These pies are loaded. And all of them sound incredible when you are reading the menu. But a choice had to be made and I cannot overstate how delicious the pie was. I got Blueberry with Lemon Cream and Christine got Key Lime Chess. And just a heads up, if you can’t get to Royer’s café for lunch, they do have a pie stand in town where you can just get a slice and some coffee.

We got free ice cream for being teachers!

After all that yummy food and pie, we felt like it would be prudent to walk it off a little and enjoy the true small town charm of Round Top, TX. Let me just say, I have not been to a friendlier town than Round Top. Every store we went into, the people were happy to see us, chat for a few minutes, make recommendations to us. And really, the town caters to girlfriend getaways. Many of the people we saw around town were groups of women, friends, mothers and daughters, sisters.

In the growth of popularity surrounding girlfriend getaways it seems that there has been marketing towards cruises and cross country trips to major cities. Round Top was a reminder that it doesn’t have to be that extravagant. If you have the time and the means those type of trips are lots of fun. But there is a whole realm of possibilities in exploring places around your own home!

So as you may have noticed. We had previously taken a brief (or long) hiatus from blogging. But with the advent of our tenth Friendaversary we felt like maybe it would be a good time to revisit our blog. And as if the universe was giving us a sign that maybe it would be good time to kick things off again we received two emails this month from lovely ladies sharing their friendship stories with us. We are looking forward to sharing more of our adventures with you and we hope that you will keep sharing your stories with us!
